A shift in my own focus came about five years ago when I started to study spiritual formation and how does a person grow in their knowledge of Christ and the outworking of that in the world at large, particularly outside the four walls of the church.
Coming from a business background, where it is all about testing and measuring, I did start to think through the outcome of the growing movement of prayer. I started doing something that I perhaps should not have done, and that was listening to how people prayed. While I know that God sees the heart, and knows what is happening in a person’s life. I was seeing us praying prayers that I wouldn’t even answer. Combined with that there seemed to be a growing disappointing happening within the prayer movement when after extended periods of prayer that the outcome we were praying for did not happen.
This started a series of conversations with people around the fact that Jesus is interceding for us right now. Do we need to be constantly going back to the throne room and asking for God’s perspective and God’s way of praying for the situation and join him rather than us bombarding heaven with what we would like.
This has changed the way I pray and I encourage others to pray. Let’s stop and listen first and then go from there.
I have also been heaving influenced by Bob Beaudine’s book “2 Chairs”, asking: “God, what is on your heart for me today?” Which has lead to a whole series on asking God questions.
I personally see that we are in a time of transition in the prayer movement of coming back to sitting at Jesus’s feet. Not running ahead of him, but hearing from him clearly and moving forward accordingly.
It is not easy, but the journey has been incredible.
Looking forward to assisting you in any way I can.
